Empowering Educational Leaders for Sustainable Development in Greece
May 7, 2025

KMOP successfully implemented four training workshops for educational leaders, part of the European project AELIA, entitled “Building the Capacities of Educational Leaders to Integrate and Evaluate Sustainability Practices in Education”. The trainings took place over two cycles on 2, 4, 7, and 9 April 2025, with the participation of 30 educators.

Participants worked collaboratively to design action plans aimed at embedding sustainability within their school environments. These plans were informed by qualitative criteria and tailored to the realities of the Greek educational context. Among the innovative ideas proposed were the development of school gardens, the implementation of reuse and recycling practices, partnerships with local stakeholders, and the organization of activities involving students and the broader community.

“Our aim was to demonstrate how sustainability can be integrated into every aspect of school life — not only within the curriculum but also through its culture, governance, and daily operations. Through a holistic approach that encourages the active involvement of all stakeholders, we empowered participants to design meaningful actions whose impact will be continuously evaluated” stated Rania El Ampasy, Senior Project Manager at KMOP.

Cultivating Learning Communities for Sustainable Development

The programme sought to provide participants with practical tools and knowledge to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within their educational communities.

Participants enhanced their skills and competencies through experiential and collaborative activities covering topics such as: core principles of sustainability education and its connection to everyday school practices; the role of schools as agents of positive change for the environment and society; the importance of inclusive participation in sustainability initiatives; pedagogical approaches that foster student engagement and social awareness; and the use of assessment tools and digital media to support sustainable educational practices.

Discussions also addressed institutional challenges faced by schools and underscored the necessity of systematic support and continuous professional development for educators and school leaders.

This initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening the educational community’s role in the green transition and fostering a culture of sustainability within Greece’s educational institutions.
