From Dialogue to Policy Impact: Advancing Sustainability in Greek Education
November 19, 2025

On 18 November 2025, the Greek Policy Learning Meeting (PLM) was successfully held online within the framework of the AELIA Project.

Bringing together 66 policymakers, education authorities, school leaders, educators and civil society representatives, the meeting aimed to strengthen structured dialogue on integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into Greece’s formal education system. Participants validated and discussed the policy recommendations presented in the AELIA White Paper, exploring their feasibility and long-term institutional uptake.

The discussion confirmed a key shift in perspective: sustainability should not be treated as a standalone subject, but as a holistic, value-based approach embedded in school culture, governance and everyday practices. Participants emphasised the need to move beyond fragmented, short-term initiatives towards a coherent national strategy ensuring continuity and systemic impact.

Four thematic axes guided the dialogue: sustainability and curricula; collaborative networks; evaluation and indicators; and digital transformation. Strong support emerged for cross-curricular integration, early childhood engagement, and experiential learning rooted in local community needs. Participants also endorsed incorporating sustainability indicators into existing school self-evaluation mechanisms, drawing on UNESCO’s four-pillar framework.

A notable proposal concerned the establishment of a Sustainability Coordinator role at school level, alongside the development of a unified national digital platform to centralise resources, share good practices and support long-term monitoring.

The Policy Learning Meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening national ownership of AELIA results, reinforcing policy coherence and laying the foundation for a more systemic and transformative approach to sustainability in Greek education.
