While sustainability is a primary goal on today's campuses, challenges arise from neoliberal practices, such as sacrificing green areas for parking lots, as both professors and students increasingly need more parking spaces on faraway campuses.  Institutional change requires tough decisions to align sustainability goals alongside the three key areas (social, environmental, and economic). These tough decisions require the willingness and motivation to use pool cars, institutional buses, or public transportation to maintain the campuses’ green spaces for educational, recreational, and interdisciplinary purposes. Here, easy solutions to allow cars to be parked on campus during academic activities highlight the difficulties in promoting sustainable practices.  Negotiating the sustainable goal of maintaining green spaces demands incentives and practical transport solutions (implementation and investment in institutional buses). 

Environmental Sustainability

Waste Reduction: Create centralized composting stations and expand recycling bins.

Social Sustainability

Cultural Awareness: Support events that celebrate cultural diversity and inclusion.

Economic Sustainability

Sustainable Purchasing: Buy long-lasting furniture and eco-friendly products.

Για τη βιωσιμότητα ως προς το περιβάλλον θα συνέβαλλε σημαντικά η εγκατάσταση φωτοβολταϊκών στις στέγες, η ενεργειακή αναβάθμιση των κτιρίων, η εφαρμογή προγράμματος ανακύκλωσης, η φύτευση δέντρων, όπως και η προώθηση αξιοποίησης φιλικών στο περιβάλλον μέσων μεταφοράς των φοιτητών (π.χ. ποδήλατο). Σε ό,τι αφορά την οικονομική πλευρά, θα ήταν απαραίτητη η εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας και νερού, η αξιοποίηση πράσινων τεχνολογιών, η μείωση εκτυπώσεων και λοιπών αναλώσιμων. Σε ό,τι αφορά την κοινωνική βιωσιμότητα θα ήταν θεμιτό να υπάρχουν προγράμματα ψυχολογικής υποστήριξης των φοιτητών, διασφάλιση προσβασιμότητας για άτομα με αναπηρία, ανάληψη πρωτοβουλιών σε εθελοντικές δράσεις υπέρ των ευάλωτων ομάδων στην τοπική κοινότητα και η υιοθέτηση πολιτικών κατά των διακρίσεων.

Für die wirtschaftliche Säule wäre es gut, wenn das Mensa-Essen von lokalen Bauern und Unternehmen bezogen wird, die nachhaltig ihre Produkte herstellen.

Für die Umwelt-Säule wäre ein Gemeinschaftsgarten beispielsweise gut um dort gemeinsam heimische Blumen, Kräuter, Obst und Gemüse anzubauen, welche zum Beispiel für Bienen als Nahrung dienen können.

Um den Gemeinschaftsgarten auch zur gesellschaftlichen Säule zu zählen, sollte man diesen auch inklusiv machen. Er sollte Barrierefrei und für alle zugänglich sein, mit genügend Platz.
